Walk-in, walk-out procedures
Treatment for varicose veins has advanced considerably in the past two decades. The development of less invasive methods, such as walk-in, walk-out procedures that address the vein internally (endovenous ablation), has been a significant improvement. Enhanced scanning protocols, foam sclerotherapy, and avulsion treatments have also contributed to higher success rates. These modern techniques have substantially lower complication rates compared to the traditional surgical stripping procedures.
Endevenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
Endovenous laser ablation, often referred to as EVLA (or EVLT), is the gold-standard treatment for varicose veins – as recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Foam Sclerotherapy
Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is the gold-standard treatment option for varicose veins when EVLA is not required, as recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
It’s worth noting, though, that the vast majority of patients with varicose veins do require EVLA.

Avulsions / Phlebectomies
Avulsions, also referred to as phlebectomies, are used as an alternative to foam sclerotherapy, for the treatment of any varicose veins that remain after endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) has treated the cause.
